Still searching for Pakistan's elusive hybrid rice

by GRAIN | 11 Jul 2006
On June 21, 2006 a delegation of Chinese scientists was once again in Pakistan to discuss cooperation in research and development for hybrid rice. This was the 16th visit of the kind by Chinese scientists and it's evident that there's some frustration over the lack of success that the Pakistani researchers are having with China's hybrid rice technology. Pakistan has been working with this technology since 1986 but has yet to develop a decent hybrid variety. Also, China's Longping High-Tech Holding Co began field trials of its hybrids in 2001.

The Pakistan Agricultural Research Council told the Daily Times that they're now stressing the need for a "fast-track" approach to cooperation, but the paper did not elaborate on what this might mean.
