Growing Diversity – West AfricaTITLE OF EXPERIENCE: Experiences of the association of partners for the development of Siguiri AUTHOR: Association for the Development of Siguiri COUNTRY AND REGION: Guinea, Siguiri - High Guinea ECOLOGICAL ZONE: Savannahs and humid area ABSTRACTThe Siguiri region is an area of savannah with trees and bushes, where itinerant agriculture and extensive herding are practised. As a result of the deterioration of the natural environment and the reduction in biological resources in their area, the members of the group have realised the value of the resources which they must manage if they are to ensure that these resources will be available to future generations. The forests are currently threatened by the unregulated exploitation of resources: bush fires, poaching, felling for unsustainable commercial gain and unregulated mining. Traditional knowledge of the area, passed on from generation to generation has been shown to be useful in the maintenance of an ecological equilibrium which is in harmony with the local environment.
