TITLE OF EXPERIENCE: Local Management of fishing resources at Boulbinet

AUTHOR: Assocation of Fishermen of Boulbinet

COUNTRY AND REGION: Guinea, Conakry

ECOLOGICAL ZONE: Maritime

ABSTRACT

The fishermen organisation of Boulbinet, a member of the development committee for the Conakry harbour landing stages, is aiming for food self-sufficiency. This organisation has for more than eight years and practices small scale fishing and exporting fish to the United States, once it has been treated (smoked fish). In the past the local fishermen respected biological rest periods. Now, industrial fishing, which is in competition with local fishing, has led the Boulbinet's fishermen's organisation to fish without interruption, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This will have consequences for the sustainable management of fishing resources.
